Mike Christie is the Founding Direct of Blue Island Consulting Ltd, and a professor of environmental and ecological economics at Aberystwyth University’s Business School.His areas of research specialisation include the economic and social valuation of natural resources and associated ecosystem services, and economic impact assessment. He has utilised a wide range of non-market valuation methods including choice experiments, contingent valuation, contingent behaviour and travel cost method, as well as the LM3 and input-output analysis. These studies have addressed a wide range of natural resource and environmental issues including, both marine and terrestrial ecosystems, water quality, biodiversity, agri-environmental schemes, recreation and tourism.
Recent projects that he has worked on have included NERC’s BESS (Diversity of Upland Rivers for Ecosystem Services and Sustainability- £3m), VNN (BRIDGE -£50k), and ESPA (Can capturing global ecosystem services reduce poverty – £2m) programmes, GII (Sustainable forest management – $250k), as well more applied Defra / CCW research on e.g. the ecosystem service value of the UK BAP (£250k) and SSSIs (£100k). He also contributed to TEEB, the UK National Ecosystem Assessment and IPBES.
He has published widely in leading natural science and economic journals, books / book chapters, and commissioned research consultancy reports.
